Abstract

This symposium addresses the pedagogical and conceptual challenges and opportunities in middle/high school of supporting the development of critical literacy skills and civic dispositions through the study of literature and history, with the goals of identity development in tandem with preparation for civic engagement. Presentations include longitudinal studies of use of a digital authoring tool for critical literacies in literature and history along with a longitudinal study of the underlying pedagogical model of scaffolding students’ everyday linguistic, social and epistemological repertoires to support such critical literacies across content areas.
