Session Summary

Understanding and Promoting Black Children's Positive Development: Researchers Investigating Sociocultural Equity and Race Network

Sat, April 23, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Early Education and Child Development Virtual Paper Session Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In this discussion-based symposium, discussants and presenters will engage in critical conversation about unpacking anti-Black racism as an environmental context that erodes health and educational opportunities. The session will include three brief paper presentations in the areas of health, education, and the workforce as illustrative examples of work that seeks to better understand and promote Black children’s positive development. The bulk of the session will be devoted to the panel discussion, followed by time for questions and comments from attendees. This structure will provide re-framing and tools for educational researchers to better conduct work that recognizes and disrupts the processes that lead to inequitable development opportunities for Black children and families.
