Session Summary

Engaging Undergraduate Students in Participatory Action Research: A Lessons Learned Workshop

Sat, April 23, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Manchester Grand Hyatt, Floor: 2nd Level, Harbor Tower, Seaport Ballroom C

Session Type: Workshop

Abstract

This interactive workshop will focus on the opportunities and challenges that working with undergraduate students as inside researchers in participatory action research (PAR) could offer to critical scholars who seek to promote social justice through their investigations. The facilitator will share lessons learned and strategies from two qualitative PAR projects in which she partnered with undergraduate students and developed two distinct research collectives (RC) to investigate issues related to the undocumented student community. Throughout the workshop, participants will engage in exercises to apply the content to their own research, and in conversations about the nature of relationships between outside and inside researchers; particularly as it relates to shared decision-making and power dynamics between academics and undergraduate students.
