Session Summary

Designing Online Professional Development Toward Creative Production

Mon, April 25, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Recently, online teacher professional development (oTPD) initiatives have attended to multiple logistical barriers (cost, location, etc.) and provided opportunities for teachers to partake in high quality learning experiences. However, popular technologies such as massive open online courses (or MOOCs) often rely on unilateral pedagogical approaches (e.g. lectures, text-based approaches). This symposium builds on the affordances of oTPD by presenting new research into the design and implementation of oTPD focused on both engaging teachers in creative production and developing creativity-centric pedagogies educators can bring into their own classrooms. By centering oTPD programs from four different creative contexts (project based learning, making, tabletop gaming, arts-based curricula), this symposium provides deep and widely applicable insight into the design of creativity-centric professional development.
