Equity Across the Border: Reimagining Mexican Teacher Preparation to Meet the Needs of Transnational Students

Thu, April 21, 11:30am to 1:00pm PDT (11:30am to 1:00pm PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: North Building, Lobby Level, Marriott Grand Ballroom 6

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium brings together US and Mexico-based scholars who have collaborated in an ongoing book and professional development process to help Mexican teachers imagine US school contexts that many of their students have previously negotiated prior to their presence in Mexican classrooms. Grounded by the truths that the median age of Mexican immigrants is about 15 and that Mexican schools enroll nearly 800,000 students who were born in the US and/or have prior school experience there, the session describes efforts to support Mexican teachers better understanding this portion of their enrollment and adapting their classroom and school practices to support these students' success. Such changed orientations and capabilities are necessary to enact “equitable education systems for the 21st Century.”
