Session Summary

Interaction as a Site for Ideological Negotiation and Transformation in Science Teachers' Learning

Sat, April 23, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: North Building, Lobby Level, Marriott Grand Ballroom 11

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Critical theoretical perspectives emerging recently in science education (Author et al., 2020) call for rearticulating the discipline by centering the heterogeneity inherent in science learning (Rosebery et al., 2010). Expanding science disciplinary activity is implicitly political, involving the destabilization of dominant STEM ideologies. Science teachers draw from these ideologies in sanctioning and shaping disciplinary science learning environments. This session draws from research that emphasizes the productive potential of understanding ideological sensemaking in interaction (Philip et al., 2018; Discussant et al., 2020) to explore the ideological dimensions of teachers' engagement in heterogeneous forms of science learning using interaction analysis. When complexities of teachers' ideological negotiations are visible at the interactive scale, possibilities emerge toward cultivating heterogeneous, consequential forms of science learning.
