Care and Compassion in Educational Settings: Cultural-Historical Perspectives

Sat, April 23, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Manchester Grand Hyatt, Floor: 2nd Level - Harbor Tower, Harbor Ballroom F

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Building on cultural-historical theorizing, this symposium brings together five front-line studies exploring care and compassion in educational settings both theoretically and empirically. While care and compassion are widely recognized as important aspects of educational work in current research they are often treated in ways which blur their complex entanglement in institutional practices and organizational culture. In contrast, together the presentations of this symposium draw an alternative and highly nuanced picture. In all, they advance our understanding of interactional dynamics and structural conditions that can advance and repress how care and compassion are enacted in education.
