Out-of-School-Time Youth Arts Programs: What Are the Big Juicy Questions?

Abstract
Out-of-school time (OST) youth arts programs are crucial mechanisms for improving the educational experiences of historically marginalized young people. This session describes promising practices, pressing challenges, and gaps in our understanding of OST youth arts programs in the collective learning ecology. Specifically, the objectives of this session are to: (1)present an overview of findings from our national, critical qualitative study with OST leaders and (2) share five key insights from our collective work that highlight major themes in OST youth arts research including humanizing arts-based research methods, re-interpretation of youth arts assessment, considering affiliate program models, characteristics of successful teaching artists, and seeing OST youth arts through the lens of the Indigenous Southwest.
