Hip-Hop, Comics, and Speculative Education: (Re)Storying Equitable Education for the 23rd Century

Abstract

Two of the most present, prominent and persistent popular cultural phenomena are hip hop and comic books. And both have been the subject of study in media and educational spheres among others. But what are the multimodal, sociocultural, and/or political overlaps? How can teachers and learners develop a robust understanding of how the intersections of these cultural forms participate in the shaping of subjectivities, worldviews, and pedagogic possibilities? What implications do these provocations hold for teaching and learning?
This symposium examines theoretical, aesthetic, and cultural linkages among hip hop culture, comics, and critical pedagogy. We interrogate the sociocultural production of culture(s), knowledge(s), and praxes while posing questions about the educability of those often positioned as Other.
