Session Summary

"The Only Light We've Got": Storytelling and Critical Literacies as Method and Antiracist Praxis

Sat, April 23, 11:30am to 1:00pm PDT (11:30am to 1:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This session features papers utilizing innovative theoretical and qualitative research methods that center on humanizing research through the exchange of stories and the dialogic raising of critical consciousness. Diverse storytelling methods are explored through critical race theory applications to grounded theory, and Indigenous storytelling methods in TribalCrit. These considerations are paired, in this session, with an exploration of critical literacies and storytelling methods in hip hop and comic pedagogies. Through all of these papers, a critical analysis of racial justice and the breaking down of hierarchies is centered, so that storytelling methods become both the framing for critical literacies and representations, and the avenue for antiracist praxis.
