Abstract

Inequities in educational achievement in Singapore and Indonesia are associated with differences in access to material resources and forms of symbolic capital. Those differences are exacerbated when schools and classrooms value some literacy practices over others, preferring dominant practices that are aligned to ‘middle class’ literacies.
Our main hypothesis here are policy statements and discourses around student centricity and harnessing of students’ interests and strengths and yet there is uneven understanding of the varied literacy practices that students engage in.
The objectives of the panel is to advance the recognition of multiliteracies and expand the notions of ‘valuable’ knowledge. This is especially pertinent to students who have been historically underrepresented, unheard, and marginalised in high performing educational systems.
