Humanizing and Liberatory: Imperatives for Equitable Postsecondary Education Systems in the 21st Century

Abstract

Historically and predominantly white institutions (HPWIs) have communicated a commitment to marginalized students (England & Purcell, 2020). This was pronounced in 2020 as institutions responded to increased visibility of violence against Black and other marginalized peoples. Many institutions issued statements of support. While some institutions considered programs to address their oppressive roles, most need more robust and critical systemic approaches. This symposium will provide insights into the experiences and perspectives of minoritized students across several four-year institutions. Participants included undergraduate Black students, urban and Appalachian undergraduate alumni, and Black male doctoral students. These insights enable decision-makers to critically consider the efficacy of institutional programs, and dismantle oppressive policies and practices to cultivate equitable educational systems for the 21st century.
