Abstract

The Orange County Teacher Pathway Partnership (TPP) targets and prepares underrepresented community college students for future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education. The program presents the classroom as workplace, as students prepare lesson to teach students in an afterschool program offered by the YMCA in Anaheim, California.

This study examines the TPP STEM Institute to understand participants’ skills and experiences gained in the program from 2015-2018. Students who participated in the STEM Institute gained pre-professional skills and teaching experience through various activities in the program. Attending the program increased college student confidence in implementing science projects. In addition, college students gained technical skills in science and teaching through professional exposure.
