Session Summary

Radical Acts of Parenting and Kinship

Thu, April 21, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: North Building, Lobby Level, Marriott Grand Ballroom 2

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Parenting and the relational dynamics within kinship offer radical pedagogical possibilities. In this session, we center different forms of research around two thematic areas focusing on mothering and knowledge-making in the homeplace as liberatory praxis and parenting as a kin-making ecological pedagogy. Both bell hooks’ (1994) theorization of homeplace as a site of respite, refuge, and radical resistance and Donna Haraway’s (2016) theorization of kin-making as an enduring relatedness provide departure points from Western racialized knowledge making traditions and entry into more intimate and kinful relations.
