Abstract

The Internet is considered a major information source, especially for informal, post-university learning. Young professionals use online sources as an information and learning tool. Critical reasoning regarding online information (Critical Online Reasoning (COR)) used for learning and professional processes in medicine, law, and teaching is considered a highly relevant competence facet. Current research among university students and graduates indicates substantial deficits in their COR skills. However, there is little research into online information-seeking and corresponding competencies of young professionals in job-specific educational processes as of yet. This symposium presents recent unique findings from a research program, which measured COR skills among young professionals from these three domains using newly developed and validated computer-based performance assessments in a real online environment.
