Disruptions, Democratic Processes, and the Politics of Education

Abstract

This session focuses on the intersection of education and our democratic processes broadly conceived. It is particularly important to consider these intersections as the education system grapples with the continuing effects of Covid-19 and systemic racism. Accompanying these twin pandemics is the increased political polarization that has riven the nation as demographic shifts and social movements have spurred calls for a reimagining of our national identity and honest reckoning with our nation’s history.These discussions have also led to hotly contested debates around COVID-19 mask and vaccine mandates, critical race theory bans, and civic education legislation. Panelists will examine the ways in which policymakers have taken up these and other critical issues in federal, state, and local policy.
