How Contemporary Educator Movements Are Transforming Unions, Schools, and Society

Abstract

Throughout the past few years, educators have led the most significant U.S. labor uprisings in over a quarter-century, organizing alongside parents and community members for such common good demands as affordable health care and equitable school funding. These uprisings can be seen as evidence of the growth of social justice or movement unionism. This symposium brings together scholars and practitioners from diverse contexts whose research emphasizes the heterogeneity, intersectionality, knowledge production, and tensions within these movements. The session is supported by Critical Education journal and all session participants are contributors to, or editors of, a four-issue special series currently underway. This session provides an overview of some of the work featured in this series.
