Invited Session: Conducting Community-Engaged Research on Motivation From Our Partners' Perspectives

Abstract

This year’s meeting theme asks researchers to consider how we cultivate equitable educational systems. Without intentional planning, research itself can perpetuate inequalities (e.g., Held, 2019) and purport harm for our participants and their communities (e.g., Smith, 2021). The notion of community-engaged scholarship (CES; see Gordon da Cruz, 2018 for a review) has emerged as a model for research teams committed to promoting equity in their work. In CES projects, researchers collaborate with community members to solve meaningful, real-world problems. As such, CES relies upon mutually-beneficial, mutually-respectful partnerships. In this session, our primary objective is to highlight considerations for launching community-engaged research studies related to motivation from our partners’ perspectives.
