Division B Fireside Chat. Understanding the Attacks on Antiracism and Anti-Oppressive Teaching: A Background Brief and Discussion of Reactions

Abstract

Starting in 2020 and accelerating over time is a historic wave of attacks on anti-racist and anti-oppressive curriculum (most notably against Critical Race Theory) in state legislatures and local school boards. This Division B Fireside Chat explores what's happening and where, with what purposes and towards what impact--and what it means for educational scholars, particularly graduate students, to intervene individually and collectively. We will hear from Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, who co-authored two research briefs and organized an international conference on this topic, as they dialogue with Division B Graduate Student Representatives Taylor Hamblin and Sarah Ishmael and Vice President Isabel Nunez.
