GSC Session: Being Critical of Quantitative Methods in Graduate Education and Education Research

Abstract

Current procedures for teaching and applying quantitative methods in education research often fail to contextualize the ways in which quantitative methods have been used to re/produce harmful structures in education, especially along the lines of race, gender and sexual identity, and socioeconomic status. Recently, there has been a push toward applying critical methods of inquiry to the process of teaching and using quantitative methods in order to investigate and confront the damaging effects of these wide-ranging research practices. This panel will touch on various critical approaches to quantitative methods and ways in which graduate students, faculty, policy makers, and community members can collectively act toward advancing the field of critical quantitative methods.
