Reclaiming the Parenthetical: Rebuilding Community via Critical Disability Studies and Curriculum Studies

Thu, October 31, 3:30 to 5:00pm, Hyatt Regency, Floor: 3, Camden

Session Submission Type: Panel Discussion

Abstract

This interdisciplinary panel includes five scholars in disability studies and curriculum studies who are engaged in reclaiming the parenthetical pedagogies/bodies/curriculum that are usually acknowledged and then quickly ignored so as to allow “the dirty work of schooling” (La Paperson, 2010) to carry on undisturbed. The panel is organized as an unstructured dialogue that centers (disability) in a discussion of curriculum. The proposal that follows is emblematic of discourses/bodies/theories that have historically found themselves within parentheses (disability at the intersections of difference). This panel however rather than reducing the parenthetical to a palimpsest, rather seeks to reclaim what exists within the parentheses (disability at the intersections of difference) in order rebuild radical and transformative community via (disability) curriculum.
