Envisioning Pedagogies of Student Activism in the College Classroom

Thu, November 7, 3:00 to 4:30pm, Hyatt Regency Greenville, Floor: 1, GARDENIA

Abstract

Student activism on college campuses have historically been imperative in demanding equitable policies, curricular inclusion, and reshaping the order of sociopolitical discourse. Inspired by student activism movements historically and contemporarily, the authors bring forth the possibilities of "activist pedagogies" in the college classroom. In this conceptual paper, the authors share their year-long theorization of what "activist pedagogies" elicit, as well as the praxis that must accompany them to enact material change on our campuses. Ultimately, we engage in this work within the backdrop of ongoing anti-DEI legislation in our home state that has systemically uprooted decades worth of work dedicated to minoritzed students. Although these realities persist, we believe the classroom remains a possibility where student activism begins, is cultivated, and fortified.
