Tensions and triumphs in historically responsive lesson planning

Fri, November 8, 8:30 to 10:00am, Hyatt Regency Greenville, Floor: 1, REGENCY F

Abstract

This session highlights the tensions and triumphs of preservice teachers planning and implementing lessons using Muhammad’s (2023) historically responsive literacy (HRL) framework in an abolitionist teacher residency program (Albright et. al, 2023). The HRL framework is a curriculum guide for teachers to move beyond teaching skills and intellect, which is often the focus of state curriculum standards, to plan and teach lessons inclusive of her five pursuits of identity, criticality, skills, intellect, and joy. With the support of residents’ university supervisors and coaches (USCs) and other members of the residency staff and residents navigate the teaching in ways that honor students’ identity, cultivate criticality, and create joyful learning experiences for their learners. Residents participating in this study discuss and demonstrate what it means to use the framework including successes and challenges they experience translating theory to application using the five pursuits in lesson plan development and implementation.
