This paper nuances and problematizes the dominant narratives and archetypes related to the parenting and educational approaches commonly associated with Asian-heritage families in the U.S. Using counter-narratives constructed by analyzing a diverse set of semi-structured interviews with second-generation Asian American college students who attend a selective public university, this paper demonstrates how Asian American youth explicitly reference dominant discourses, often rejecting and nuancing these narratives when reflecting on their families and their upbringings. This analysis ultimately calls into question the notion of Asian American typicality.
