In this paper, the authors present a model for race-conscious caring -- a leadership ethics that draws from an interview study with school leaders with an interest in making their schools more equitable learning environments. We synthesize prior work from ethical theorists, scholars in culturally responsive leadership, and critical race theorists in education to present a model grounded in critical caring, race-consciousness, and justice leadership. Examples from leaders that exemplify the model and those who fall short provide perspective on how to build capacity in communities.
