Apple (2019) references both the overt and hidden curriculums and how both are important tools of socialization. Across the five states of the Deep South, the hidden curriculum of secondary Social Studies (specifically regarding U.S. History) is one of minimization and erasure, capitalistic emphases, and a dependence upon religion. Based on research conducted for a dissertation, this paper summarizes the hidden Social Studies curriculum of the Deep South, as shown through the intersection of state academic standards, enacted legislation, and proposed legislation over the last twenty five years.
