How New York State Social Studies Standards Recreate Mutually Exclusive Representations of Latinidad and Blackness

Fri, October 31, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Hotel Albuquerque, Potters

Abstract

This paper aims to bring education research into conversation with recent scholarship that furthers discussion of critical Latinidad(es), particularly how knowledge of Latinx groups and identities has been strictly divorced from Blackness. We interrogate how state standards, even in a reliably “blue” state, reify strict racial boundaries and hierarchies (of Latinidad) that might prevent “multiracial futures of intersectional justice.”
