Multiple Presenter Session: Panel
This panel explores the intersection of race, sexuality, and academic spaces through the lens of "academic realness" as performed by gay Black and Latino men. Borrowing from the ballroom culture's concept of "realness," this study examines how these individuals navigate and construct their identities within academia, often negotiating between institutional expectations and their cultural realities. By conceptualizing "academic houses" as intellectual and cultural kinship networks that mirror the ballroom scene’s familial structures, this paper advocates for a more inclusive academic environment that affirms and celebrates the contributions of marginalized scholars.
