Collective Care in action: Liberatory learning, activism and community care through creative, embodied research practice

Fri, October 31, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Hotel Albuquerque, Alvarado D

Multiple Presenter Session: Alternative Session

Abstract

This session reflects a commitment to humanizing, holistic pedagogies and creative research practice that have the potential to create the radically democratic learning spaces in higher education that this call invites us to explore. It describes engagement with Legislative theatre (Theatre of the Oppressed) over the course of the year, as a participatory action research methodology exploring issues around access and disability justice by engaging with the embodied, lived experiences of community members as well as our own. The purpose of this session is to invite participants into our course-based research process and share our experiences with collective care. We will provide an overview of our theoretical frameworks, course structure and the use of theatre as a pedagogical and research method, describe essential community collaboration, share PAR tools (like our Legislative theatre action report and student generated documentary) and provide an opportunity for participants to engage in our dramatic process.
