Disruptive Boundaries: Black Feminist Geographies, Storywork, and Social Justice Research in the US South

Sat, November 1, 10:15 to 11:45am, Hotel Albuquerque, Alvarado G

Multiple Presenter Session: Panel

Abstract

This panel aims to share the work of doctoral students and candidates located in the US South who engage in critical and creative approaches to theorizing and methodological innovation. They engage in Black feminist geographies and spatial theorizing in speculative essays, fostering spaces for Black girl joy through Sister Circle methodology, fictional storytelling, and combining theory with methods to create Caribbean Feminist Storywork. These presenters demonstrate how emerging researchers seek or—or create—creative and innovative ways to disrupt systems in place that aim to prevent them from engaging in research for social justice for others and for themselves. As a collective, the panel aims to foster critical hope among other doctoral students and emerging researchers to use their theories and forms of inquiry to subvert and reimagine current possibilities for curriculum work. Presentations of their work will be followed by dialogue with the discussant and audience.
