Traditions of Public and Counterpublic Education in Queer and Trans Communities

Fri, October 31, 1:15 to 2:15pm, Hotel Albuquerque, Alvarado B

Multiple Presenter Session: Panel

Abstract

Purpose: This 3 paper panel explores the educational potential of queer and trans traditions of protest. Context: The complications of intersectionality coupled with the unsteadiness of trans and queer political progress has too often meant that progress is only partial and always subject to backlash, especially in education, points we discuss using queer and trans theories. Primary sources: Drawing on archival materials and historical antecedents to our current struggle, we mobilize the traditions of subversion that these tumultuous times call for, seeking to remind us that protest and revolt have always been necessary, especially in regard to care and teaching of queer and trans youth and support for queer and trans teachers. Approaches and implications: As reminders of our heritage of struggle, we show the possibilities of grassroots revolt, alternative education, and coalitional support, as well as our need for perpetual caution when progress does not include all of us.
