Forging Teacher Pathways Through Flames: Cultivating Diversity in Schools Amid Backlash and Resistance

Fri, October 31, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Hotel Albuquerque, Alvarado D

Multiple Presenter Session: Panel

Abstract

This panel will highlight findings from a four-year partnership between a public university, a statewide teachers labor union, and local school districts in metro Detroit to prepare racial equity warriors. The partnership responds directly to the conference theme “Gazing Toward a Multiracial Future of Intersectional Justice” by showcasing how intersectional approaches to teacher preparation and professional development are creating pathways toward reconstruction, representation, and reparative justice in education. The panel will examine the goals, components, and impact of key initiatives: a teacher pathway program for underrepresented high school students, a statewide conference and competition, cultural competency professional development for current PK-12 educators, and a mentorship program connecting aspiring and practicing teachers. Drawing from critical race and intersectional frameworks, presenters will utilize qualitative and quantitative data to share how this multi-sector collaboration is creating systemic change despite political resistance to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in education.
