Evangelicals’ Attitude toward Israel – Statistical Study

Mon, December 17, 5:00 to 6:30pm, Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center, Waterfront 3 Ballroom

Abstract

Evangelical Christianity is the largest of all religious movements in the United States with 26.3% of U.S. adults belonging to an evangelical church. Evangelical Christians are also known as ardent supporters of the State of Israel.

Our research team has conducted a survey to study Christian Evangelical attitudes toward Jews, Israel, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It focuses on understanding the sources of Christian Evangelical attitudes and the actions that individuals might take on the basis of these attitudes. The survey contains about 40 questions and was administered by LifeWay Research, a professional polling company, with a national panel of 1,000 completed surveys of evangelical or born-again Christians.

Our research intends to build knowledge about grassroots Christian Zionists and their views on a range of matters such as on Israel, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Temple Mount, settlements, the movement of the US embassy to Jerusalem, and Jews in general. We believe that the results of the research can also provide very helpful data in thinking about anti-Semitism in America, especially in the South.

In the presentation, we will discuss the survey results, with a particular focus on whether the support for the State of Israel is motivated by geopolitical and security concerns, eschatological beliefs, fear of retributions, or guilt for historical anti-Semitism.
