Changes to Jewish Orthodoxy on the Lower East Side

Mon, December 17, 3:00 to 4:30pm, Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center, Cityview 2 Ballroom

Abstract

My comments will be based on my long-term fieldwork and participation at an all-male yeshiva on the Lower East Side. In my understanding, the regulars at this yeshiva view the institution as neither "modern Orthodox" nor "haredi" but as representing a common-sense but threatened middle ground. If I have time, in addition to articulating the sense of group identity that view affords, I may also link that shrinking "middle" to the decline of the Lower East Side as a Jewish neighborhood.
