This paper will explore Max Weinreich's sociological study of Jewish youth, DER VEG TSU UNDZER YUGNT, through the lens of YIDISHE VISNSHAFT. Jonathan Boyarin has contrasted the epistemological ramifications of the difference between WISSENSCHAFT DES JUDENTUMS and YIDISHE VISNSHAFT, in which Yiddish, or Jewishness, is not only the object of study but also inflects the method and approach. DER VEG, which foregrounds the methodological and theoretical challenges of Weinreich's research, is a useful test case for understanding both the ideological project of expanding the Yiddish scientific vocabulary and shaping the social sciences for Jewish/Yiddish purposes.
