Intersecting Inequities: Discrimination, Policy, and Health in Underrepresented Communities

Thursday, November 13, 3:30 to 5:00pm, Property: Hyatt Regency Seattle, Floor: 7th Floor, Room: 709 - Stillaguamish

Session Submission Type: Panel

Abstract

This panel explores how structural discrimination and policy environments shape health outcomes among marginalized populations, with a focus on racial, gender-diverse, and intersectional experiences. Analyzing Systematic Discrimination and Racial Disparities in the United States examines systemic racial disparities across U.S. institutions, providing a macro-level view of persistent inequities. LGBTQ-Friendly Policies as a Moderator of Discrimination and Health Outcomes in Transgender/Gender Diverse Populations focuses on transgender and gender-diverse individuals, analyzing how LGBTQ-friendly state policies mitigate the negative health impacts of discrimination in mental health settings.  Perceptions of healthcare access and racial inequity among racial/ethnic groups during the COVID-19 pandemic investigates perceptions of healthcare access and racial injustice during the COVID-19 pandemic across racial/ethnic groups, using a critical race theory lens. Together, these papers illuminate how identity-based discrimination is both produced and potentially mitigated through public policy. The panel contributes to the social equity and race discourse by highlighting opportunities for evidence-informed interventions, equitable policy design, and deeper engagement with structural determinants of health.
