Supporting Policy Research: An Info Session on Grantseeking and Making an Impact in Academia and Beyond

Abstract

This session will provide a practical overview of applying for research support in the social sciences from four prominent supporters of policy relevant research. Panelists will discuss their foundations' priorities, the proposal writing and review process, the basics of what makes a good proposal, processes for developing ideas for funding and budgeting, and tips & resources that specify what to include in proposals. With extensive experience evaluating proposals, panelists will discuss how to develop and write a sound application from the perspective of a funding organization. We will delve into the current landscape of research funding, including the challenges facing applicants and funding organizations as the federal scientific funding infrastructure changes. We will also highlight examples of recent grants made by each organization that are policy relevant. Particular attention will be paid to new applicants and early career applicants who may not be familiar with the processes of these funders and how they differ from federal funders such as NSF and NIH. All of the funders represented fund a variety of disciplines, research methods, and topics.
