Health Policy, Family Shocks, and Behavioral Responses Across the Life Course

Abstract

This panel examines how public policies, insurance transitions, and acute shocks shape health and behavioral outcomes for individuals and families. The papers bring together evidence on the effects of parental health shocks on children’s short-run mental and behavioral outcomes, the impact of Title X rule changes on teen birth rates, the consequences of terrorist attacks for teenagers’ socioemotional skills and risky health behaviors, and the role of insurance coverage in shaping medical decisions among Medicaid-Medicare switchers. Together, the session highlights how institutional rules and unexpected shocks influence health-related choices, access to care, and well-being across different stages of the life course.
