Community Group Description

The APPAM First-Gen Researchers Community gathering will bring together first-generation scholars, practitioners, students, and allies navigating public policy research, professional careers, graduate education, and institutional systems. Attendees share a common interest in creating a supportive space for researchers who may be the first in their families to pursue graduate education, policy research careers, academic pathways, or professional leadership in applied public policy.

This gathering will provide an opportunity for community members to connect in person, network, exchange practical strategies and thought ideas, and identify ways the community can continue supporting members beyond the Fall Research Conference.
Planned points of discussion include:
1.Navigating institutional systems: sharing strategies for conference participation, funding, research, publishing, mentorship, career advancement, and AI innovation.
2.Building professional visibility and networks: exploring how members can strengthen their presence within APPAM and identify opportunities for collaboration, service, and leadership.
3.First-gen experience and leadership in the AI-era workforce: reflecting on how emerging technologies are reshaping policy research, workforce pathways, and the skills needed for future public policy careers from a first-generation scholar's lens.

The gathering will be semi-formal, with an introductory panel of 3-4 members geared towards the points highlighted above.
After the brief panel, the gathering will be welcoming and open to discussion, interaction, and networking. to deepen community connection and identify actionable priorities for continued engagement.
