Community Group Description

An embryonic field of early childhood policy is emerging with burgeoning numbers of scholars, policymakers, and researchers. As it coalesces, the field faces critical substantive issues that must be addressed. This gathering will provide an opportunity for the early childhood policy community to take stock of where we are, chart future directions, and build connections to sustain field-building efforts. Multifaceted and spanning a wide array of disciplines (e.g., education, health, social welfare, mental health) early childhood policy encompasses the policies and systems that shape the lives of young children and their families. Hosted by the Early Childhood Policy in Institutions of Higher Education Initiative (ECPIHE), this session invites attendees from diverse backgrounds who are passionate about advancing policies for young children, including researchers, faculty members, students, practitioners, policymakers, and funders, to come together to connect, share their experiences, and strategize.

As this field continues to evolve, we aim to intentionally cultivate community across individuals from distinct vantage points who understand the unique demands of early childhood systems and the children, families, and communities they serve. This interactive session will include a brief introduction to ECPIHE’s national work, followed by small-group discussions around key questions, such as:
- What role can institutions of higher education and higher education professionals play in shaping the emerging field of early childhood policy?
- What career opportunities exist for those interested in early childhood policy leadership and research?
- How can students and emerging professionals prepare for this work in a rapidly changing job market?
- What lessons or insights have come out of early childhood policy research, and what questions should be explored?
- What should be considered when designing and carrying out early childhood policy research?
- How can we break down silos and foster meaningful partnerships across those interested in early childhood policy work across a variety of disciplinary backgrounds?

By exploring questions such as these and engaging in informal networking opportunities, participants will leave with new insights, resources, connections and ideas for growing and strengthening the early childhood policy field.
