This panel will explore ways social media can be used to generate data about protests. Panelists will describe new approaches to analyzing data from Sina Weibo and Twitter. These data will provide insight into why people protest in China, how state violence against protesters affects sentiment towards government, predicting contentious action in sub-Saharan Africa, and measuring violence and protester demographics using images from protests.
