Moot court, simulated appellate argument, is a growing alternative/complement to more common mock trial programs. In this paper, I build on recent research I have conducted on both student motivations for participating in competitive moot court teams and faculty approaches to coaching and teaching teams. Combined with my own experience starting moot court teams at multiple institutions, I provide a guide for faculty members considering starting a competitive moot court team.
In part one, I discuss learning objectives and benefits of moot court. Part two focuses on the logistics of recruiting a team and fostering institutional support. Part 3 addresses the potential hurdles faculty need to be aware of, including time constraints and workload. I then conclude with recommended readings and other resources.
