Building Each Other Up? Evangelicals' Attitudes on Civility in the Age of Trump

Sun, September 1, 8:00 to 9:30am, Hilton, Gunston East

Abstract

Using an original data set collected in June 2018, this paper examines how religion impacts attitudes about civility in American politics. Creating a scale of incivility tolerance, I consider whether white Evangelicals hold distinct attitudes compared with other Americans about which behaviors, such as belittling or insulting someone, shouting over someone you disagree with during an argument, or making comments about someone's patriotism, can be considered uncivil. Moreover, I examine whether white Evangelicals are more likely than other Americans to consider President Trump's behavior as civil and whether they are less likely to believe that the level of civility has declined since his election
