Network analysis has typically examined the formation of entire networks, while failing to examine the behavior of subpopulations and groups. These approaches are limited insofar as tie formation likely varies within and between groups. This paper explores the conceptual dynamics of between and cross group behavior through a novel statistical tool, the hierarchical ERGM. This approach allows researchers to understand why groups within a network have differing tie propensities. Estimated through an MCMC algorithm, the hierarchical ERGM is quick and accurate in explain between and within group variation in network structure.
