Immigrant Incorporation: The Remaining Puzzles

Abstract

Immigrants arrive in destination countries with hopes for a better life as well as potential contributions to the host society. Examples abound of individuals and groups that become fully integrated, to the extent that they become indistinguishable from the local population. On the other hand, alienation has generated, on the part of a tiny minority, a terrorist reaction. Populations and policy makers struggle to define societal goals as well as to devise policies to achieve those goals. Our knowledge of these processes has improved but centers primarily on wealthy western democracies. The breadth of knowledge in this research arena is presented and critiqued to develop a new and critical research agenda.
