After the landslide victory of newly elected President López Obrador in July 2018, it has become clear that the regional distribution of his vote presents important differences in each State of Mexico and that his strengths and weaknesses need to be analyzed at the subnational level. More recently, subsequent local elections held in June 2019 show that states like Aguascalientes, Tamaulipas and Durango neither did support MORENA evenly, high lightening the increasing importance of regional elites in Mexico’s new, emerging party system. Sub-national politics will be crucial for the upcoming local elections in 2020 and will profoundly reshape Mexico’s polity during the mid-term federal legislatives elections in 2021.
