Yves Winter’s Machiavelli and the Orders of Violence (Cambridge University Press, 2018) constitutes an important intervention within Machiavelli’s scholarship. It offers the first systematic reconstruction and interpretation of violence in Machiavelli’s political thought; an interpretation that ranges across the entirety of his political writings. Yet the book also makes an important intervention and contribution to contemporary debates about the representation of violence in political life. This roundtable seeks to offer a discussion about the contribution of Machiavelli and the Orders of Violence to both Machiavelli scholarship and contemporary political theory.
