Session Submission Type: Full Paper Panel
Scholars have recently started to analyze party press releases in an effort to understand their rhetorical strategies. Press releases allow nearly continuous measures of party rhetoric, since – unlike parties’ election manifestos – they are published continuously throughout the electoral cycle. This panel brings together four empirical studies by junior and senior scholars who study the strategies that parties use to respond to each other, as well as voter reactions to party communications, by analyzing press releases issued by political parties and MPs.
Issue Engagement and Avoidance in the Electoral Cycle - Thomas M Meyer; Markus Wagner, University of Vienna
Election Campaigns, Party Communication and Coalition Governments - Heike Klüver, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin; Anthea Jeanne Alberto
Cueing and Backlash Effects of Party Press Releases on Public Opinion in Germany - James Adams, University of California, Davis; Dominic Duval, Université du Québec à Montréal; Alexandra Feddersen, University of Fribourg, Switzerland
Changing Positions without Losing Face. How Parties Shift their Issue Positions - Alexandra Feddersen, University of Fribourg, Switzerland
