Session Description

The International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Their Families (1990) is poorly ratified in major immigrant receiving nations. This fact leaves a lacuna in the human rights protection of migrants. This panel addresses alternate mechanisms to protect migrant worker rights multilaterally, nationally and locally with examples from Europe, the United States, Australia, Canada and across Asia. It questions the extent to which these mechanisms succeed, or fail, in effecting protection in the lived experience of migrants by examining patterns of implementation. Finally, it examines the role that judges, activists and policy-makers can play in ensuring that rights are enforced, or circumvented.
