Session Submission Type: Full Paper Panel
The promise of democratic equality is most often undercut by a myriad of discrimination policies that target people because of their race, class, and sex. Each paper on this panel analyzes how a particular institution – the military, courts, marriage, and the family – offers a pathway having the potential for achieving greater civil, social, economic, and political rights for disadvantaged groups. Together the papers on this panel contribute an historical and panoramic assessment of the capacity of key institutions to make the democratic promise a reality.
